info
1. Valid photo I.D. (if under 18 years of age, you must also have a waiver).
2. Valid Social Security number
3. Testing fee (money orders ONLY - made payable to VISIONS).
First time testers should plan to take the GED® exam over a 2-day period with approximately 4 1/2 hours of testing on each day. Please note, however, that taking all 5 subjects of the exam (science, social studies, language arts - reading, mathematics and language arts - writing) over a period of 2 consecutive days is strongly encouraged; however, not required. Taking the exam over a period of more than 2 days is an option.
Yes. Next year, as of January 1, 2014, there will be a new GED® exam! All the scores of everyone who has tested in the United States and Canada who have not passed the entire exam will expire on that date; those individuals will have to start over. To find out more, click here:
After completing the entire GED® exam at VISIONS (all 5 subjects of the exam), a person who took the test should expect to wait, approximately, 8 days before their results arrive at their home in the mail. The wait period may be shorter but, sometimes, the wait may be a little longer. A person who took the exam should NOT call the testing center for results as scores cannot (and will not) be given over the phone.
As required by the American Council on Education, to pass the GED® exam and to receive an official government issued GED® certificate, a person who took the exam must earn a total score of, at least, 2250 points, with no score on any individual subject of the exam being less than 410 points.
* Please note that earning the minimum passing score of 410 points in every subject will not obtain the 2250 total points needed to pass the entire GED® exam. Per the standards of the American Council on Education, an average score of 450 points per subject is needed to obtain the 2250 total points necessary to pass the entire GED® exam. For example...
Example #1: if a person scored a 410 in mathematics, a 470 in science, a 450 in social studies, a 470 in language arts - reading, and a 430 in language arts - writing, the total score would be 2230 and, although no score was less than 410, the person did not score enough total points to earn a GED® certificate.
Example #2: if a person scored a 400 in mathematics, a 500 in science, a 450 in social studies, a 480 in language arts - reading, and a 490 in language arts - writing, the total score would be 2320 and, although the total score surpasses the 2250 required score, the math test score was less than the required 410 and must be re-taken.
Any "non-passed" subject of the GED® test may be re-taken as many as 2 more times within this calendar year (for a maximum total of 3 attempts this year to pass). If not successful after three attempts in 2013, the person taking the test must wait until the year 2014 and re-test in EVERY subject of the GED® exam as all of their scores in every subject will expire. No subject of the GED® exam can be taken more than 3 times per year.
With a waiver, a person who is, at least, 16-years-old may take the GED® exam. An application for waiver requires the signature of the applicant's parent/guardian as well as verifiable documentation that the applicant has officially dropped-out of, and is no longer enrolled in, school. For more information or to obtain a waiver application, contact VISIONS at 313-838-3801.
Currently, it only cost $50 to take the GED® exam for ALL those who are testing at VISIONS for the first time (even if you've tested somewhere else before); still, one of the LOWEST testing fees in the state of Michigan.
